Student of the Month: May

Jo Knowles

On April 13th, the author Jo Knowles visited our school. She talked about her book, See You at Harry's which we had all read, and answered student's questions. She also briefly explained her other teen books, a total of 7.

Science Fair

      This year our seventh and eighth grade students did a school wide science fair. There were many projects and many more people. Setting up the science fair took quite a while, we worked hard to complete the projects over the course of 2-3 months. All the students were given grades on there presentation and work ethic and many exceeded in these standards. We were encouraged to wander in our spare time to see what everyone was doing and we were even allowed to go down to the other teams. The 5th and 6th grade joined us in our wanders and we had kids from other schools come over to checks these projects out too. Over all the science fair was a great success.

Sirius Student Of The Month

      Every month on team sirius we choose one student to be our student of the month. 
We choose them by finding the student who best displays the Sirius qualities, which are Spirit, Introspection, Responsibility, Imagination, Ubuntu, and Service. This student is announced monthly at the "All Team Meeting" and then the dog mascot, Star will live in the students home room for the rest of the month. Star was given his name because the sirius teachers give out stars to any student who has really shown one of these special characters in a superb way. Star is our mascot because he stands for all of these and is given to a student who has shown these characteristics in more than one way. This month Erin was chosen as our student of the month. Congratulations Erin!

The star student award was given to Will for his Spirit, Imagination, Respect, Introspection, Ubuntu, and Service.

Dog Star Drama

Our most recent Dog Star Drama was a reflection of our civil war unit. It was all about the Gettysburg address. We had Abe Lincoln recite it and soldiers exchanged views. It was an great play!

Civil War Projects

We have been learning about the Civil War for the past couple of weeks. Now we are starting projects on a topic we choose and how it affected the war.  

Science Fair Update

See You at Harry's

Students have been reading the book See You at Harry's during SST, and in April the author, Jo Knowles, is coming to visit.

Winter Festival!

On the last day of school before winter break, team Sirius celebrated by having a winter festival!  This meant that we were able to wear pajamas, were put into different groups (with friends usually), and rotated through all of the rooms with fun activities in the first half of the day.  In the second half we had an all team meeting and watched a movie or hung out.

Dog Star Drama

Once a month at our all team meeting, a few students volunteer to put on a play.  We call this "Dog Star Drama".  This past month 5 sirius students took on this commitment and performed a play called The Battle of Song.  This is a short play described as A finished Tale of Magic.  

Student of the Month

    Every month at our all team meeting we choose a student of the month.  A student is chosen based on his/her actions and impacts on our community.  SIRIUS is an acronym standing for, Spirit Imagination Responsibility Introspection Ubuntu Service.  This month Sadie was chosen as our student of the month because of her actions.  Congratulations!

Sirius Student of the Month

Every month on Team Sirius we choose a student of the month. We choose them by finding the student who best displays the Sirius qualities, which are Spirit, Introspection, Responsibility, Imagination, Ubuntu ( I am because we are), and Service. The student is announced monthly at the "All Team Meeting" and then the dog mascot, "Star" will live in the winner's TA (Teacher Advisory) for the rest of the month.

Cell Models

In science class, students created cell models using Scratch for a few weeks.

Dog Star Drama

Every month at our all-team meeting, we put on a play. We call it "Dog Star Drama." This month students volunteered to put on a performance of  the Borrowers.

SST's

Every Tuesday through Thursday we have SST (Students Support Time), there are many groups working on many different things. These groups can range from math games to free write, the groups are for whatever the teacher believes the student may need some help on. Each teacher has their own SST, then there are extension SST's, ike math games with Ronda, Math strategies with Mr.Hinds, YWP (Young Writers Project)with one of the Foreign Language teachers, or silent reading with Mrs.Chabot.

 This is a picture at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center of  the Working Group Theater group who performed Out of Bounds. Our school went on a field trip to see their performance that raised awareness for bullying, but most of all cyber bullying. All the performers had a to deal with bullying and they told their stories. It was a great performance and they related with the kids because they talked a lot about social media and how that related to bullying. And they did a thing called the mannequin that was a lot of fun.

What's happening in Sirius

Recently in team sirius science we have been learning about cells. We learned about what's in cells, what things are made of cells, and we've looked at cells through microscopes. We have made many diagrams of plant cells and animal cells. We labeled and drew details and wrote the steps of what cells do.  I really enjoyed looking through the microscope. We got to look at many pre made slides such as, bone tissue, liver, antennas, and so much more. We also got to make some of our own slides like saliva, some plant and onion skin, and pond water. We used blue staining dye to enhance our view of the slides. Although the dye kills the cells so you cannot see them moving if you dye it. It is also cool that if you stick a camera lens or phone lens slightly in the microscope you can take pictures of it. There are some pictures down below. Everything living is made of cells.

In Humanities we played a game called race to the white house. It's similar to monoply. You get money and go around the board. Here are some pictures. 

Parent-Teacher conferences

Learning About The Election Process

This week in Humanities we've started learning about the election process in relation to the upcoming election between Former Secretary Hillary Clinton and Mr. Donald Trump. So far, one of the things we've learned about the spectrum of political views, all the way from Radicalism on the far left side of the spectrum to Reactionism on the far right side of the spectrum. In Ms. Scott's class we've learned about the difference between popular votes and electoral votes. To help cement that idea we played a very fun game where we were political canidates trying to win the most popular and electoral votes. Now we have moved on to learning about the issues in the current election and some of the vocabulary.
